New Sotherby's wine Encyclo |
 |
The new edition of Sotheby's Wine Encylopedia edited by Tom Stevenson is simply astounding. Taking five years to prepare (Stevenson had calculated three years but this was extended thanks to the incredible changes which have come about in the world of wine during the last decade), this is a masterpiece, elevating Stevenson to the level of gurus such as Jancis Robinson, Oz Clarke or Hugh Johnson. This book, structured in the form of an encyclopedia, lives up to its promise: it collates readily understandable data on all aspects of wine in a clear format which is enhanced by a pleasing layout. It is, in addition, beautifully illustrated and contains a multitude of photographs of vineyards and wineries from throughout the world. |

The revolution in the vineyards and wineries JEREMY WATSON.
The new generation of Spanish wines which are today recognised as being among the best in the world is the result of the coming together of two fundamental factors: on the one hand, the solid winemaking tradition in Spain and on the other, the technological improvements which have been introduced over the last thirty years in the vineyard and wine cellars. All this has given rise to an unprecedented revolution which Jeremy Watson was privileged to witness. An English writer with a passion for Spain, Watson managed Wines of Spain in the United Kingdom. This work, which differs from the usual style of book, presents an exhaustive study of the wine industry in Spain. First it explains the principal elements of viticulture and winemaking that allowed this transformation to come about and which gave birth to new types of traditional wines and to the creation of totally new wines. It goes on to describe the 64 Spanish Denominaciones de Origen and lists more than 350 wineries and comments on more than 750 carefully selected wines. In addition, this exceptional work includes 74 exclusive maps and nearly 500 original photographs and illustrations of vineyards and wineries throughout Spain. |
