Pressings: Celebrating the big vintage reds

THE Coonawarra springs to life in October, both on its home turf and as the focus wine region at Tasting Australia in Adelaide. The annual Cabernet Celebrations kick off on Friday, October 14, with the event's feature master class looking at how the region compares to the rest of the world in tackling this tricky variety.
Presenters include Peter Forrestal, new Master of Wine Toni Paterson and Majella winemaker Bruce Gregory.
The October 15-16 weekend continues the theme with several added fun diversions, including Doug Balnaves' anecdotal and historical bus tour of Penola and Coonawarra districts finishing with a glass of bubbles with his family.
More serious pundits will have the chance to explore aged cabernets from several cellars, including Bowen Estate's decade of 1990s gems.
At Hollick Wines, discover how young and old vintages of different varieties age as you try to pinpoint the changes that take place over time.
At Redman Wines, you can explore the ageing effects of different-sized bottles as the winemakers open a six-litre imperial, 1500ml magnum and the usual 750ml bottles of the same cabernet to see if size really does matter.
The food business of celebrating wines also is important in the region and this year it's the famous locally grown wagyu beef that gets the royal treatment in several venues. Koonara Wines is offering a tasting of the beef with a glass of its yet-to-be-released 2002 Ambriel Gift. Majella Wines joins Redfingers Cafe for a serve of its famed "Red Dog" wagyu pie and a glass of Majella blend called "The Musician"(...)
