Alsace: A Breath of Fresh Air

Theo gets to grips, or should that be sips, with white wines from Alsace.
Well, after my last installment about the way to buy expensive which cannot be drunk for at least two years, I thought I'd offer some advice on wines that are as far from en-primeur Bordeaux as you can get. The wines in this article are white, available now, admirably affordable and will only prove to be a good investment if every other wine region on the planet goes up in smoke. Yes, I’m talking about Alsace.
Alsace wines suffer from an image problem, in this country at least. The flute shaped bottles, Germanic sounding grape varieties and physical proximity, lead many wine lovers to be believe that they are German. To be fair this most eastern of French wine regions was, in the not so distant past, in Germany and as any visitor will tell you, it’s narrow streets, half timbered buildings and cuisine are firmly Teutonic in feel, but the wines are very definitely French and are some of the most versatile and value laden in the world.
